John M. Schofield autographed handwritten letter (ALS), two pages on a single folded sheet, dated March 14, 1885. Written entirely in Schofield’s hand and signed, the letter constitutes a fine example of post-Civil War correspondence from one of the Union Army’s most accomplished commanders.

John McAllister Schofield (1831–1906) was a Union general who distinguished himself during the Civil War, particularly in the Western Theater, where he played important roles in the Atlanta Campaign and the Franklin-Nashville Campaign. He later served as Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson and eventually became Commanding General of the United States Army. Schofield remained one of the most influential military figures of the late nineteenth century and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek.
