Memorial Day printed program for one of the nation’s earliest Soldiers’ Memorial Decoration observances, held Saturday, May 29, 1869, in Natick, Massachusetts. The 4.25 x 10.25” broadside outlines the complete order of procession, featuring Post 63 of the Grand Army of the Republic, returned Union soldiers and sailors, the Medfield Brass Band, Masons, firemen, town officials, schoolchildren, and citizens. It further details the parade route through Natick to the town cemeteries, where ceremonies honoring the Union dead were to take place, and is dated May 27, 1869, in print with Chief Marshal George E. Franklin named at the conclusion.

Memorial Day originated in 1868 when General John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, established Decoration Day as a national observance to honor Union soldiers who died during the Civil War. The first official observance was held on May 30, 1868, with communities across the country soon organizing annual parades, cemetery processions, and the decoration of veterans’ graves.
