Daniel McCook Jr. signed official U.S. Army Quartermaster Department manuscript report titled “Report of Persons and Articles Employed and Hired,” completed at Chickamauga, Tennessee, for the month of December 1863. Signed boldly at the conclusion, “Daniel McCook, Col. Commanding,” the large-format document records the employment of civilian Jack J. Thompson, serving as a Saddler, hired from December 1–31, 1863, at a monthly wage of $40.00. Prepared by Captain H. Dean, Assistant Quartermaster, U.S. Army, the report documents the civilian craftsmen whose specialized skills were vital to maintaining Union cavalry equipment and military logistics during the closing months of 1863. Measuring approximately 16.5 x 14 inches.

Very good condition with expected filing folds, light toning, and minor handling wear consistent with official military use. Daniel McCook’s signature remains bold and well-preserved.

Colonel Daniel McCook Jr. (1834-1864) was one of the most distinguished members of Ohio’s legendary “Fighting McCooks,” the remarkable family that furnished more than a dozen officers to the Union Army during the Civil War. A cousin of the famed “Tribe of Dan” McCooks, he earned a reputation as an accomplished cavalry commander in the Western Theater, serving with distinction during some of the war’s most important campaigns. By December 1863, Union forces were firmly established around Chickamauga, Tennessee, following the pivotal victories at Chattanooga, and the Quartermaster Department was working tirelessly to equip and supply the armies preparing for the 1864 Atlanta Campaign. Signed documents from Daniel McCook are considerably scarcer than those of many Union commanders and are highly sought after for their direct association with the celebrated Fighting McCook family, whose extraordinary record of military service made them one of the most renowned families of the American Civil War.
