Original mounted albumen photograph depicting the 5th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment monument at Gettysburg, published by noted Gettysburg photographer W. H. Tipton. Measuring approximately 5 x 8.5 inches overall, the photograph captures the regiment’s distinctive memorial marker, consisting of a granite boulder mounted upon a stone base bearing the unit designation, erected to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the regiment during the Battle of Gettysburg.

A pencil notation on the reverse identifies the image as: “Marker in memory of N.H. 5th regiment at Gettysburg.” Tipton’s imprint appears at the lower mount edge, identifying the image as one of the many battlefield views produced by the celebrated Gettysburg photographer whose work helped document and preserve the evolving landscape of the battlefield in the decades following the Civil War.

The 5th New Hampshire Infantry was among the most distinguished regiments to serve in the Army of the Potomac, sustaining exceptionally heavy casualties throughout the war. At Gettysburg, the regiment fought as part of the II Corps during some of the battle’s fiercest engagements. Battlefield monuments such as the one depicted here were erected by veterans and state commissions during the late nineteenth century to honor the sacrifices of those who served and to permanently mark their positions on the field.

William H. Tipton (1850-1929) was Gettysburg’s most prolific battlefield photographer and one of the most important visual documentarians of the Civil War’s aftermath. Beginning in the 1870s, Tipton systematically photographed monuments, veterans’ reunions, and battlefield landscapes, creating an invaluable visual record of Gettysburg as it transformed from a battlefield into a national memorial landscape. His photographs remain highly sought after by collectors of Civil War and Gettysburg material.
