Confederate States of America $100 note issued by the Citizens Bank of Louisiana, New Orleans, featuring an impressive and highly decorative design representative of the finest Southern banknote engraving of the antebellum period. Printed by the American Bank Note Company, the note displays an allegorical central vignette surrounding a portrait of George Washington, with additional portrait engravings at left and right and ornate green overprint devices incorporated into the design. The reverse is printed in red with intricate geometric lathe work and a central portrait medallion.

Unlike the better-known Confederate government treasury notes issued during the Civil War, notes such as this were produced by Southern banking institutions and circulated as private bank currency. Following secession and the outbreak of war, many Southern banks continued to issue and circulate their own paper money, making these notes an important part of the financial history of the Confederacy.
