Early printed sermon titled Sermon, Preached at Trinity Church, November 22, 1812, the Sunday After the Interment of Thomas C. Amory, Esq., delivered by Rev. J. S. J. Gardiner, Rector of Trinity Church, Boston. Printed by Munroe and Francis, No. 4 Cornhill, Boston, 1812. The sermon was preached following the death and burial of prominent Boston merchant, philanthropist, and civic leader Thomas Coffin Amory (1762-1812), a respected member of one of New England’s leading mercantile families. The text opens with Ezekiel 24:16, “Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke,” and reflects upon Amory’s life, character, Christian faith, and contributions to Boston society. Housed in an early custom paper-covered portfolio bearing a handwritten presentation label identifying the sermon.

Very good condition. Complete as issued with light expected age toning, scattered foxing, and handling wear throughout. The sermon bears period library markings, including a withdrawn stamp from the Maine Historical Society Library, along with contemporary pencil notations to the title page and portfolio. The protective portfolio exhibits moderate wear and edge toning but remains sound.

Thomas Coffin Amory (1762-1812) was a prominent Boston merchant, civic leader, and philanthropist whose family played an important role in the commercial and cultural life of early nineteenth-century Massachusetts. Rev. John Sylvester John Gardiner (1765-1830), Rector of Trinity Church for more than four decades, was among Boston’s most influential Episcopal clergymen and was widely respected for his sermons and leadership within the city’s religious and intellectual community. This uncommon memorial sermon offers a contemporary tribute to one of Federal-era Boston’s distinguished citizens.
