Egbert Benson autograph letter signed (ALS), dated August 19, 1813, New York. One-page handwritten letter, entirely in Benson’s hand, measuring approximately 6.25 x 6.25 inches and tipped onto a larger 8 x 10 inch archival support sheet. Addressed to G. W. Van Schaick, cashier of the Bank of Albany, Benson instructs that all checks drawn by him as executor of the estate of John Lower prior to the receipt of the letter are to be honored unless they have been countermanded, writing in part:

“You will consider all checks on the Bank of Albany by me as Executor of John Lower made prior to the time when this letter shall come to your hands, as countermanded, and consequently should any be presented to forbear from paying them.”

Signed, “Egbt. Benson.”

The lower margin of the support sheet identifies Benson as “Chief Justice of N.Y. & member of the old congress.”

In overall very good condition with expected age toning. The original manuscript has been neatly tipped to a larger archival support sheet.

Egbert Benson (1746-1833) was an American Founding Father, lawyer, and statesman from New York. A delegate to the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1788, he helped guide the young nation during the Confederation period following the Revolutionary War. Benson later served as Attorney General of New York, Associate Justice of the New York Supreme Court, and as a justice of the New York State Supreme Court before being appointed by President George Washington as the first judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit. He also served in the United States House of Representatives and played an important role in the legal and political development of both New York and the early United States.
