Details:

Joseph Hewes autographed manuscript court writ issued during the American Revolution, measuring approximately 6.5 x 5.5”. Dated February 11, 1778, the document was issued in the State of North Carolina and commands the Sheriff of Burke County to summon George Harper to appear before the Superior Court to answer a debt claim brought by William Brogden in the amount of one hundred pounds. Hewes signs prominently at the conclusion of the writ in his capacity as an Assistant Clerk, alongside the signature of Thomas Machem, Clerk of the Court.

Docketing on the reverse records subsequent court proceedings, including continuances into May and August 1779, and bears additional period notations and endorsements. Executed during the third year of American independence, the document offers an uncommon glimpse into the administration of civil justice in Revolutionary North Carolina while the war for independence was still being fought.

Fair to good condition, with expected fold wear, edge losses, scattered staining, and overall toning. The manuscript remains largely legible, with Hewes’ signature clearly visible at lower left.

Joseph Hewes (1730-1779) was a Founding Father, delegate to the Continental Congress from North Carolina, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. A successful merchant before the Revolution, Hewes became one of the strongest advocates for American independence and played a critical role in developing the Continental Navy, earning recognition as one of the founders of the United States Navy. Although his health declined during the Revolution, he continued serving in Congress until his death in 1779, only a few years after signing one of the nation’s most important founding documents.
