Samuel Smedley autographed manuscript document, dated May 1, 1795, signed as “S. Smedley” beneath a sworn affidavit concerning the sloop Mary Ann of Greenwich, Connecticut. Measuring approximately 8 x 7 in., the manuscript certifies that the vessel’s license, issued by the Collector for the Port of Fairfield on September 12, 1793, had been lost and affirms the belief that it would be returned if found. Executed before Smedley, the document represents a scarce post-Revolutionary manuscript signed by one of Connecticut’s most celebrated privateers and naval officers.

Good condition, with expected folds, scattered toning, edge wear, and light paper loss at the lower margin. Contemporary docketing appears on the verso, while Smedley’s signature remains bold and well preserved.

Samuel Smedley (1753-1810) was one of Connecticut’s most celebrated Revolutionary War privateer captains. An experienced merchant mariner before the Revolution, he earned distinction commanding the privateer Defence and later the Connecticut state brig Minerva, capturing numerous British prizes during the war. Following the Revolution, Smedley returned to civilian life in Connecticut, where he remained active in maritime affairs and local public service.
