Matthew Griswold manuscript court document signed as “Mattw. Griswold Assistant,” dated December 24, 1760, Norwich, Connecticut. Single folio manuscript, written on both sides, issuing a legal summons over a debt. Includes numerous period docketing notations and endorsements on the reverse. Signed by Griswold in his capacity as an Assistant of the Connecticut General Assembly, several years before his leadership during the American Revolution.

Measures approximately 7.5 x 6 inches.

In overall very good condition with expected age toning, fold lines, scattered staining, edge wear, and period docketing and filing annotations on the reverse.

Matthew Griswold (1714-1799) was an American lawyer, judge, Revolutionary War patriot, and statesman who served as the 17th Governor of Connecticut from 1784 to 1786. Before becoming governor, he served for many years in Connecticut’s colonial government as a member of the Council of Assistants, Chief Justice of the Superior Court, and Deputy Governor under Jonathan Trumbull. During the American Revolution, Griswold helped oversee Connecticut’s civil government and military administration, supporting the Patriot cause as one of the colony’s senior leaders. He later presided over Connecticut’s ratifying convention for the United States Constitution in 1788 and remained one of the state’s most influential political figures of the Revolutionary era.
