A David Brenner collection of handwritten jokes Comprising approximately 117 notecards, 5 x 8 in., all with handwritten notes, many with magazine pictures and newspaper articles taped to the card representing the original sources for the jokes. Brenner does not write full sentences; rather, he writes cues so that his jokes are delivered in a natural manner. A small article about Rolling Stones' band member Keith Richards prompts Brenner to write the brief note: 'Fell out of palm tree. Knocked him conscious.' Some cards feature subject headings such as 'Flying,' 'Drugs,' 'Sex,' 'Immigration,' and his first appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (in which he wore a pair of $3.00 jeans), followed by a series of notes relating to that topic. There is even a subject card devoted to Robert Goulet! This intriguing archive offers insight into the mind of a successful comedian and the need to stay topical and explore and find humor in all aspects of life. Housed in a cutlery box with a key. Provenance: the estate of David Brenner. Cutlery box: 5.5 x 9 x 13 in. Lot to be sold without reserve.
