Attributed to Franz Xaver Winterhalter (German, 1805-1873) Portrait of a lady, thought to be the Countess of Gainsborough watercolour over traces of pencil, heightened with white 44 x 37cm (17 5/16 x 14 9/16in). Footnotes: Provenance Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 13 October 2004, lot 259. Property of a Gentleman. Winterhalter was known for his portraits of European royalty and aristocracy. The sitter is believed to be Frances, Countess of Gainsborough (1814-1885) who was a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria (1819-1901).
