Ewa Juszkiewicz’s unsettling portraits subvert canonical expectations of feminine beauty. The Warsaw-based artist replaces her sitters’ faces with masses of hair, plants, fabrics, and tribal masks. With this approach, she infuses her traditional European styles with a sense of the otherworldly and grotesque. Juszkiewicz received her MA in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gda?sk and a PhD from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. She has exhibited in New York, Paris, Warsaw, Milan, Berlin, and beyond. Juszkiewicz’s work belongs to the collections of a number of Polish museums, including the National Museum in Gda?sk, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Galeria Bielska BWA, and Zach?ta National Gallery of Contemporary Art in Szczecin.
