Tomás Sánchez
Cuban, b. 1948
Tomás Sánchez paints imagined landscapes that fall into two radically divergent categories: serene forests and waterscapes, and apparently endless mountains of trash. Sánchez is inspired by the ecosystems of South America and his native Cuba, and his dreamlike compositions evoke both nature photography and symbolic Surrealist landscapes. As he focuses on both undisturbed paradises and accumulated garbage, Sánchez considers deforestation and humanity’s ecological sins at large. The artist studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana and later at the Escuela Nacional de Arte. He has exhibited in New York, Havana, Madrid, Paris, Mexico City, and San Jose, among other cities. Sánchez’s work belongs in the collections of the Berardo Collection Museum, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the University of Essex.
