Marcel Dzama
Canadian, b. 1974
Marcel Dzama draws from folk vernacular, Surrealist film, Dada whimsy, and Soviet agitprop to create lush, dreamlike works on paper. Dzama’s primary media include watercolor, ink, and graphite, and his otherworldly figures and settings can evoke fairy tales, alternate histories, and religious iconography. Dzama received his BFA from the University of Manitoba in 1997 and has since exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Tokyo, and Stockholm. His work belongs in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Canada, the Tate, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Dzama has also produced a number of video works and sculptures, and he has designed costumes and sets for the New York City Ballet.
