Henry Taylor's raw, loosely rendered paintings of relatives, friends, celebrities, and athletes frequently offer social commentary on Black life in America. Working from memory, archival material, and live sitters, Taylor paints what he considers to be landscapes: His canvases document the world around him, as he sees it. The artist draws on aesthetic influences and references that range from painters Jacob Lawrence, Alice Neel, and Romare Bearden to Depression-era documentary photography and his own life in Los Angeles. Inequality, poverty, family, and community have been frequent themes. Taylor worked for years as a psychiatric technician before attending California Institute of the Arts, and that job inspired a sympathy and humanity that still transcends his studio practice. He has exhibited in New York, Tokyo, Zürich, Los Angeles, London, and Paris. Taylor's work belongs in the collections of the Hammer Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rubell Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the X Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and has sold for six figures on the secondary market.
