Nickolas Muray
Hungarian-American, 1892–1965

Hungarian-born artist Nickolas Muray is now best recognized for his iconic photographs of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, his lover and friend. Beyond those portraits, Muray—who fled to New York in 1913 at the first sign of war in Europe—shot hundreds of celebrities, including Martha Graham, Greta Garbo, and Marilyn Monroe. Muray later transitioned to commercial photography and mastered the laborious carbro printing process, bringing a skillful use of color to his vibrant photographs of food and other products. He was sought after by brands like Coca-Cola and Lucky Strike after taking one of the first color photographs to be illustrated in a major American magazine, titled Bathing Pool Scene (1931), which was published in the June issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. When not behind the camera, Muray was an accomplished fencer who competed with the U.S. Olympic team in 1928 and 1932, ultimately winning a bronze medal.
