Henni Alftan’s precise, sensual paintings focus on quiet moments of domesticity and the mundane. The artist imbues her tightly cropped scenes with intimate painterly detail and an occasional sense of menace: Shadows loom, and reflective surfaces such as a car mirror or knife offer eerie, chopped facial reflections. The Finnish-born, Paris-based artist studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and has exhibited in New York, Paris, Helsinki, and Milan. Her work belongs in multiple public collections, including the Hammer Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Helsinki Art Museum. Alftan finds inspiration in her daily commute and in art historical scenes; her details feel contemporary, while her compositions are timeless.
