Valerio Adami
Italian, b. 1935
A prominent figure of the European narrative figuration movement of the 1960s and ’70s, Valerio Adami is renowned for graphic acrylic paintings that embrace the cartoon flatness and eye-popping colors of comic books and Pop art at large. In his compositions—which are typically based on photographs—figures emerge from blocks of color, outlined with pronounced black lines. Though they lack visual depth, Adami’s canvases are layered with meaning; the artist references literature, mythology, philosophy, and history, and he also captures women and couples in intimate moments. Adami has been the subject of retrospectives at the Centre Pompidou, the Frissiras Museum, and the Boca Raton Museum of Art. He has participated in editions of the Venice Biennale and Documenta. At auction, his work has sold for six figures.
