Rare Lewis Dowe Stereo Camera and Accessories owned by Thomas Patrick Andrews (1865-1936), San Francisco, California, c. 1885 The camera impressed 'L. DOWE / MAKER' on distance scale and shutter linkage arm, the back of case impressed 'T.P. ANDREWS / S.F. CAL.', together with a Rochester Optical Co. tripod, five spare negative holders stamped with patent marks of Blair Camera Co., together with an adapter for 6 1/2 x 8 3/4 negatives and three conforming negative holders impressed 'PARTRIDGE / SAN FRANCISCO' and inscribed with dated notes on exposures taken in 1894, contained in a custom canvas case inscribed with initials W.S.B., camera wd. 9, dp. 8 1/2, ht. 6 1/4 in. Footnotes: Note Thomas Patrick Andrews (1865-1936) was a member of the California Camera Club and owner of a photography studio at 109 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. His work is in the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Lewis Dowe (1838-1919) was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, and lived in Illinois when he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. By 1877, he opened a photography studio in Petaluma, California, and began working in San Francisco in 1883. A musician as well as a photographer, Dowe operated an instrument shop in the city from 1896 to about 1905. He died in Portland, Oregon. A similarly marked Lewis Dowe box plate camera is in the collection of the Eastman Museum, Rochester, New York (1974.28.3554).
