Provenance Note While in the possession of Maria Agassiz, the painting was identified as 'Port. of Lewis Sanders painted by Gilbert Stuart in Boston 1812' (see below). The top frame rail retains a label of Foster Brothers, Boston, Massachusetts. The attribution likely reflected Sanders' documented ownership of an Athenaeum Type portrait of George Washington that scholars reattributed from Gilbert Stuart to Matthew Harris Jouett in 1943, now in the collection of the Middlebury College Museum of Art. An oil on canvas portrait of the sitter's wife, Mrs. Anne Nicholas Sanders (1783-1830), was attributed to Jouett much earlier than the present work.
