JOHN GEORGE BROWN (1813-1913) Old Man Seated in Chair signed and dated 'J.G. Brown N.A. / 1880' (lower left) oil on canvas 23 x 15 in. (58.4 x 38.1 cm.) Painted in 1880. Footnotes: Brown began painting various iterations of elderly rural figures in the 1870s and would return to this subject throughout his career. The model in the present painting appears as well in Brown's John Anderson, My Jo, which was likely painted in the same year and in which the man similarly holds a crutch and cane. Here Brown emphasizes the old age of his subject, highlighting his worn, weary face and disheveled hair. The present work may be a painting titled Old Age that was shown at Gill's Galleries in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the winter of 1881. It was briefly described in the Springfield Daily Republican, Feb. 3, 1881, p. 4, as a 'simple portrait of an aged man in his chair'.
