Gruppe painted the present work during a New Bedford Art Association lecture and demonstration held at the Swain School of Design in April 1955. During the event, Gruppe spoke of his technique for developing subtle, atmospheric fog scenes, emphasizing the importance of 'graduation of values' and lamenting that 'there's not enough air in the pictures [of today]... There are no lost and found edges'. Gruppe created this work during the presentation to demonstrate his technique: he began with a loose charcoal outline, followed by spontaneously formed gradients of grey to create the sky and suggestions of the boats and structures. Gruppe added details like nets and reflections last. Throughout the process he continued to work back over the entire painting to maintain its unity and cohesiveness even as more elements appeared.
