Description
A This 1864 $10 State of Georgia treasury note was issued 1864, during the Civil War. It was intended to be redeemed at the Georgia State Treasury using newly issued Confederate currency, reflecting the South’s worsening financial crisis and rapid inflation. Issued only months before Union forces occupied Georgia during Sherman’s March to the Sea, the note is a tangible artifact of Georgia’s wartime government and economy. Although commonly described as a State Bank of Georgia note, it was actually issued directly by the State of Georgia.
