Title: Pair of Grand Tour Italian Watercolours by Filippo Indoni (1842–1908), Rome 1880 Description: Pair of Grand Tour Italian Watercolours by Filippo Indoni (1842–1908), Rome, 1880
A fine and highly decorative pair of late 19th century Italian watercolours by the Roman artist Filippo Indoni (1842–1908), each signed F. Indoni Roma and dated 1880 lower right.
These charming compositions depict traditional rural Italian figures within expansive sunlit landscapes, rendered with considerable warmth, atmosphere and technical refinement. One portrays a smiling young woman carrying a woven basket across a flowering meadow, dressed in richly coloured regional costume with coral necklace and embroidered bodice. The companion painting depicts a bearded traveller or shepherd holding a walking staff beside a rocky hillside beneath an open Mediterranean sky.
Born in Rome, Filippo Indoni specialised in romanticised scenes of Italian rural life, producing works that appealed strongly to Grand Tour travellers during the second half of the 19th century. His paintings and watercolours are characterised by their lively figure studies, soft Mediterranean palette and carefully observed costume detail. Examples of his work continue to be handled by leading auction houses and specialist dealers in 19th century European paintings.
The present pair are especially attractive examples of the artist’s work, displaying confident brushwork, delicate facial modelling and beautifully observed effects of light and atmosphere. The vivid cobalt blue costume elements provide striking visual contrast against the softer earth tones and open landscapes, giving the works exceptional decorative presence.
Both paintings remain housed in their original giltwood and composition Rococo revival frames, retaining a rich aged surface and patina that complements the warmth and character of the watercolours beautifully.
