The composition depicts a kingfisher and woodpecker suspended from a nail against a painted wooden board, executed with considerable attention to detail and naturalistic observation. Through the skilful use of shadow, texture and perspective, Meucci creates a convincing illusion of depth, a characteristic feature of the trompe l'oeil tradition. Known for his paintings of birds and still-life subjects, Meucci has rendered the plumage with particular care, contrasting the vivid colours of the birds against the simulated timber ground.
