The compass retains its glazed bowl enclosing a boldly designed compass card with black and white cardinal and intercardinal points, decorative fleur-de-lis north marker and maker's signature. The instrument is fitted with its original prism sight assembly and spirit level, features associated with professional marine navigation. Designed for use aboard ship, the compass is suspended within a substantial gimbal ring allowing it to remain level despite the movement of the vessel. The mounting retains its original side trunnions, indicating installation within a binnacle or similar navigational housing. The metalwork has acquired an attractive aged patina from years of maritime service. Good original condition with age-related wear, minor surface marks and areas of verdigris consistent with age and use. The compass card remains clear and legible beneath the glazed cover.
