Title: Pair of 19th Century French Gilt Bronze Bacchanalian Ewers with Cherubs Description: Pair of 19th Century French Gilt Bronze Bacchanalian Ewers with Cherubs
A fine and decorative pair of French gilt bronze ewers in the Renaissance Revival taste, richly cast with Bacchanalian scenes of playful putti amid vines and grapes. Each ewer features a naturalistic handle formed as a fruiting branch, surmounted by a seated cherub playing a flute above a small bird. The casting is of very good quality throughout, with crisp detailing to the figural reliefs, foliage, and acanthus-moulded bases.
Originally made as decorative bronzes, the ewers were later adapted for use as lamp bases, with threaded fittings and drilled lower sections.
France, circa 1880
Both measure 17 x 11 x 43.5 (height) cm
Condition: Good decorative condition overall, with some rubbing to the gilding, oxidation, and surface wear consistent with age and use.
