Footnotes: Provenance: According to a letter dated 1982 included with the clock, this particular example hung in the offices of Woods & Milligan, the company whose inscription adorns the middle section of the clock. The letter mentions the relationship between the author's father, William J. Milligan, and his partner in the insurance business, Julius Woods, the history of the business, and the clock. Note: Sidney advertising clocks, such as this one, were usually provided at no cost after the company had sold the rotating advertisements to local businesses. They were common features of hotels, post offices, and train stations from the late 1880s to early 1900s.
