Michael Strieby Chippendale Cherry Tall Case Calendar Clock signed Strebe, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, c. 1795 with eight-day time and strike movement, complete with weights, pendulum, and winding key. Three elongated urn-form finials and swan's neck cresting above a large dial with rotating moon face surmount a narrow case supported by a base with turtle panel, all resting on ogee bracket feet, 53cm wide, 25cm deep, 241cm high (21 1/2in wide, 10in deep, 95in high). Footnotes: Note: Michael Strieby (1757-1830) was a clockmaker active in Bucks County, Pennsylvania from about 1790, when he was listed as a clockmaker in tax records, until he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1798. He then moved to Darlington, Pennsylvania in 1802 where he continued in the clockmaking trade likely until his death in 1830. He used several variations of his name - including the 'Strebe' with which this clock is signed - before later settling on 'Strieby'. He was the son of Hans Michael Strieby, also a clockmaker in Philadelphia, who emigrated from Germany in 1743 at the age of 17, and father to Jacob Strieby (1796-1885).
