English Needlepoint Carpet England circa 1800, a large, early, and extremely decorative English needlepoint carpet in very good condition. The colors are all crisp and clear with no fading or harshness. Some of the red hues appear to be derived from an insect dye (either cochineal or lac)- something which we have seen on Aubusson rugs from this era. The emerald-green color is particularly vivid and reminiscent of some of the earliest dyes on English needlepoint rugs. The design is ornately geometric but includes floral elements and whimsically drawn tertiary design elements which add both playfulness and depth to the design. An impressive piece which is ready for immediate use on the floor. Fresh from an estate in New York City. Purchased from F.J. Hakimian in Manhattan in 1990. 14 ft. 5 in. x 17 ft. 10 in.
