LaMontagne & Sons, 1989 Two-board top with applied ogee-molded rim, attached with pocket screws to shaped apron joined by triple-pegged mortise-and-tenons to slender cabriole legs terminating in flat pad feet, incised signature to bottom, 78cm wide, 45cm deep, 68cm high (31in wide, 18 1/2in deep, 27 1/8in high). Footnotes: Note Raymond LaMontagne (1939-2024) was a fourth-generation Rhode Island woodworker, whose great-grandfather migrated from Quebec to Providence in 1899. He obtained tiger maple stock from a sawmill on Route 101 in North Scituate from the 1970s through the 1990s. Raymond was the brother of sculptor Armand LaMontagne, who in 1969 famously forged a Pilgrim Century Brewster Chair that was accessioned by the Henry Ford Museum, supposedly as retribution for his insulting treatment by a curator at the Wallace Nutting Museum in Framingham, Massachusetts. Raymond's careful labeling of his own bench-made Queen Anne- and Chippendale-style furnishings indicates necessary, scrupulous honesty by comparison. As some of these labels state, he passed the family trade on to his sons Christopher and Henry, who are active woodcarvers in New England.
