Seven years after Czech artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) arrived in Paris he became world-famous overnight with his poster Gismonda (1894), designed for theatre superstar Sarah Bernhardt. Le style Mucha soon became synonymous with Art Nouveau, the modern art movement that came to define the look of the French capital.

About the artist

Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939), born in Ivan?ice, Moravia (now Czech Republic), was a Czech graphic artist and decorative painter best known for his work in Art Nouveau. Seven years after arriving in Paris, he became internationally celebrated overnight with his poster Gismonda (1894), designed for theatre superstar Sarah Bernhardt. This commission launched a prolific career in commercial and decorative art that would define the visual identity of fin-de-siècle Paris.

Mucha's distinctive style combined sinuous, flowing lines with intricate floral and ornamental motifs, often featuring idealized female figures framed by elaborate decorative borders. Working primarily in lithography, he created posters, advertisements, and decorative panels that merged fine art sensibility with commercial appeal. His work encompassed theatre posters, product advertisements, and decorative series that showcased his mastery of color harmonies and compositional elegance. Later in his career, Mucha returned to his Slavic roots, dedicating himself to monumental works celebrating Czech history and culture, demonstrating the breadth of his artistic vision beyond the decorative style that made him famous.

Le style Mucha became synonymous with Art Nouveau itself, influencing an entire generation of graphic artists and decorative designers. His innovative approach to poster art elevated commercial design to fine art status, bridging the gap between high art and popular culture. Mucha's legacy endures in both the decorative arts and graphic design, with his work held in major collections worldwide and celebrated at institutions including the Mucha Museum in Prague.
