About the artist

Leonor Fini (1907–1996), born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was an Argentine-Italian painter best known for her work in the Surrealist movement. Raised in Trieste on the Italian-Slovenian border, she suffered an ocular disease in adolescence that forced her to wear bandages over both eyes. After recovering her vision, she resolved to become an artist. Largely self-taught, she studied the Flemish masters and Italian mannerists and drew upon her own dreams for inspiration. In Paris, she came to know de Chirico, Picasso, and Dalí.

Powerful images of women dominate Fini's dreamscapes, establishing her as a vital creative force in Surrealism for many decades. In 1942, she produced what has been called the first erotic male nude ever painted by a woman. Max Ernst described her paintings as made up of vertigo, inhabited by legendary beings with miraculous plays of darkness and light expressed in pulsating pearly colors. Her work featured chimerical flesh and sphinx-like imagery that distinguished her practice within the movement.

Fini's first exhibition was held in a gallery run by Christian Dior. Her first major one-woman show took place in 1936 at the Julian Levy Gallery in New York. She participated in Peggy Guggenheim's Exhibition by 31 Women alongside Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Louise Nevelson, and Dorothea Tanning. A half-century later, her 260-piece career retrospective at the Musée du Luxembourg drew more than 5,000 daily visitors. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum, and the Museo Revoltella in Trieste.
