About the artist

James Rizzi (1950–2011), born in Brooklyn, New York, was an American artist best known for his vibrant Pop Art paintings, prints, and three-dimensional paper constructions. Combining painting, printmaking, and sculpture, he developed a highly recognizable visual language filled with cheerful cityscapes, smiling faces, whimsical animals, and playful imagery. His colorful compositions celebrate the optimism, diversity, and energy of urban life.

Rizzi studied fine arts at the University of Florida, where he pioneered his signature layered paper constructions, transforming two-dimensional prints into sculptural artworks. His innovative 3D works combined technical experimentation with accessible subject matter. The artist's practice centered on creating joyful, densely populated urban scenes rendered in bold colors and simplified forms. His approach made contemporary art approachable to a broad international audience while maintaining a consistent and distinctive visual style.

His work gained international recognition and was exhibited extensively across Europe, North America, and Asia. Career milestones included his participation in the 1996 Summer Olympics as an official artist, his appointment as official artist for the Montreux Jazz Festival, and his induction into the Artexpo Hall of Fame in 2008. A major retrospective in Mainz, Germany, in 2008 featured more than 1,000 artworks and attracted over 50,000 visitors. Rizzi collaborated with Lufthansa, Condor, Volkswagen, and Rosenthal, and created designs for Germany's official postage stamps. His limited-edition 3D constructions remain highly sought after by collectors, particularly in Europe.
