A 100 GUINEA GOLD PRESENTATION SWORD GIVEN TO ANDREW MITCHELL, VICE ADMIRAL OF THE BLUE FOR THE SURRENDER OF THE BATAVIAN NAVY SQUADRON IN THE VLIETER INCIDENT, made by James Morisset, London, 1799. 22 karat gold hilt with finely chased foliate banding on the edges of the guard knuckle bow base of the pommel (pommel cap missing) and with oak leaves bordering enamel plaques featuring a coat of arms on the upper face of the guard and inside surface of the grip, the exterior surface of the grip with an enamel plaque depicting a naval engagement, the underside of the guard with engraved presentation inscription reading 'GLYN MAYOR/A Common Council holden in the/CHAMBERS of the GUILD HALL of the CITY of LONDON,/on Friday the, 13 day of Sep, 1799./Resolved that the thanks of this Court be given/to ANDREW MITHELL ESQ. VICE ADML of the BLUE/& to the Captains Officers Seamen & Marines under his Command/for their able & Zealous Conduct in Compelling the/DUTCH FLEET IN THE TEXEL TO SURRENDER TO THE SQUADRON/of British Ships under his Command & that the Admiral/as a token of their Sense of the important Services he/thereby rendered to his Country be presented/by this Court with the Freedom of this City/& A SWORD OF THE VALUE OF ONE HUNDRED GUINEAS'; straight single-edge blade with a false edge at the tip and single narrow fuller, the blade decorated with etched and gilded foliate devices, crown over 'GR' and panoply of arms all against a blued background; with accompanying presentation certificate on linen-backed velum; a British Pattern 1827 Naval Officer's sword with scabbard and a display cabinet. Blade lg. 32 1/4, overall lg. 37 1/4 in. Footnotes: Note Sir Andrew Mitchell (1757-1806) was promoted to Rear-Admiral of the Blue in 1795 and Vice Admiral in 1799. In August 1799 he took part in the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland and during that action obtained the surrender of a Batavian Navy Squadron in the Vlieter incident.
