A JOHN FONDERSMITH FLINTLOCK LONG RIFLE, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, early 19th century. 42 1/2 in., .58 caliber octagon barrel, the top flat engraved 'J*Fondersmith'; flat lock plate with pointed tail; maple stock with incised scroll carving on the left side of the butt, incised carving around the breech plug tang, lock and side plate and raised carving along the rammer channel, brass furniture, engraved and openwork patch box, three sheet brass rammer pipes, sheet brass nose band, wood rammer. Overall lg. 57 3/8 in. Condition: Reconverted barrel toned to brown; lock is reconverted and may not be original to the rifle; stock has wood restoration at the top of the lock mortice and associated barrel channel, there is restoration to the left side of the barrel channel from between the first and second rammer pipe to the muzzle, and on the right side of the barrel channel from just behind the second rammer pipe to the muzzle, rammer is a modern replacement; lock is stiff but functions.
