A FINE NON-REGULATION MILITIA OFFICER'S SWORD WITH ROMAN HELMET POMMEL AND CHAMOIS CASE. Gilt brass hilt with cross guard with foliate, star and bead decoration, gilt double knuckle chain, helmet pommel with prominent plume, carved bone grip; straight double-edge blade with single narrow fuller and etched foliate an panoply of arms decoration; the gilt brass scabbard with all over engraved foliate, eagle, oak leaf and acorn decoration; the chamois case inscribed 'Fred W. Wellington./Worcester.' Blade lg. 31, overall lg. 37 1/4 in. Condition: Sword, scabbard and case are in excellent condition with little wear and only minor, sparce spots of toning on the blade. Footnotes: Note Fred W. Wellington was born in Shirley, Massachusetts, May 31, 1851. In 1882 Wellington joined the Massachusetts Militia and was elected Second Lieutenant on Battery B, Light Artillery, Unattached First Brigade; elected First Lieutenant in 1883; elected Captain in 1884 and served as such until 1886. He was then appointed Assistant Inspector General on the Staff of Governor Ames with the rank of Colonel until he resigned in 1889, but served additional militia appointments including Commissary General until 1904.
