Butt serial number 65409, placing production during World War I (approximately 1918) under the U.S. military contract. The revolver bears the desirable JM ordnance inspection mark attributed to Major John M. Gilbert. Designed to fire the standard .45 ACP cartridge using half-moon clips, the Model 1917 was adopted to supplement production of the Model 1911 pistol during the First World War. Additional factory numbers may be present on internal components, including the crane and yoke, and are typical assembly or fitting numbers rather than serial numbers.
