This is an original and matching WWII German Technical Emergency Corps (Technische Nothilfe, TENO) subordinate’s hewer, produced by Carl Eickhorn, the sole maker of these distinctive service weapons. The blade and scabbard both have a matching serial number. The serial on the blade is incredibly faint but visible. Introduced in 1938 for enlisted personnel, the hewer was designed for practical emergency use as a chopping or utility blade. This example features the correct hewer-style blade with visible age wear and the Eickhorn squirrel logo. The etched number on the blade matches the scabbard throat number (4191) but is very faint. Black painted scabbard body with plated fittings. The hilt retains its original plated fittings with moderate wear and flaking, while the 2pc Bakelite/plastic grip plates exhibit moderate age yellowing and one has a chip as seen in the photos. The scabbard remains solid with original black paint and plated fittings, though showing finish wear and bubbling; the rear throat is missing its hanger loop. Overall, a solid and collectible TENO hewer that are scarce and increasingly sought after, making this a desirable piece for collectors of WWII German edged weapons and specialized service organizations.
