Details:
Bob Marley's remarkable rise as the global ambassador of reggae music is documented in Rebel Music: Bob Marley & Roots Reggae, the acclaimed Genesis Publications limited edition by celebrated photographer Kate Simon. Published in 2004, the volume brings together Simon's intimate photographs of Marley captured throughout the 1970s, accompanied by essays and firsthand recollections chronicling both the artist and the cultural movement he helped define.
This is the scarce Deluxe Edition, limited to just 350 copies, with examples numbered 1 through 350 specially bound in full leather and additionally signed by Eric Clapton, whose recording of "I Shot the Sheriff" introduced many listeners to Marley's songwriting and helped propel reggae onto the international stage. This example is copy number 53 and includes the original limitation leaf signed by Eric Clapton, while the book itself is also hand-signed by photographer Kate Simon on the limitation page. Accompanying the volume is an original hand-signed 8 x 10" photographic portrait of Bob Marley by Kate Simon.
The deluxe volume is housed in its original handcrafted screen-printed wooden presentation case, produced exclusively for the deluxe edition. The substantial book features hundreds of photographs documenting Marley on stage, in the recording studio, at home in Jamaica, and throughout his international tours. Simon's photographs are accompanied by historical essays, interviews, and commentary exploring Marley's music, the evolution of roots reggae, and the broader cultural significance of the movement.
Fine condition overall. The leather-bound volume remains exceptionally well preserved with only light expected handling wear and clean interior pages. Both Eric Clapton's signed limitation leaf and Kate Simon's signature remain bold and attractive. The accompanying 8 x 10" Kate Simon signed photographic portrait displays light expected bending and age wear. The original wooden screen-printed presentation case has sustained damage with breaks to the outer wooden frame; however, all original pieces remain present and intact, offering the possibility of professional restoration or repair while preserving the original components.
Kate Simon was granted extraordinary access to Bob Marley during the height of his career, creating some of the most recognizable and enduring photographic images of the reggae icon. Published by Genesis Publications, Rebel Music is widely regarded as one of the definitive visual studies of Marley and roots reggae, with the deluxe edition made especially desirable through its luxurious binding, handcrafted presentation case, the addition of an original signed photographic portrait, and the uncommon pairing of Eric Clapton's and Kate Simon's signatures.
