Known worldwide as the "King of Zydeco," Clifton Chenier (1925-1987) transformed the traditional Creole music of southwest Louisiana into an internationally celebrated musical style. A virtuoso accordionist, singer, and songwriter, Chenier blended blues, R&B, Cajun, and Creole influences into the energetic sound that became synonymous with zydeco. Throughout a career spanning more than four decades, he recorded dozens of influential albums, performed internationally, and inspired generations of musicians while helping bring zydeco music to mainstream audiences. In 1983, he received a Grammy Award for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording, cementing his place among the most important figures in American roots music.
