A static Penguin Commando from Tim Burton's Batman Returns. Once his plan to kidnap the children of Gotham began to fold, the Penguin (Danny DeVito) released his rocket-wielding Penguin Commandos to destroy Gotham.
Production used static penguin puppets to fill out the crowd of live birds, many of whom would not stay still for the duration of the sequence. Batman Returns broke several box-office records and was nominated for a total of 11 awards, including Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup, the latter being for the work of Ve Neill, Ronnie Specter, and Stan Winston.
This static rubber penguin is molded around metal rods with foam feet and hand-painted to appear as if it was wearing a helmet and harness. It is affixed via metallic loops on the back with a painted resin rocket with vinyl stripes. Following production, this penguin underwent sympathetic repairs to its feet and left fin. It shows evidence of wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age, including bending to the tail. Dimensions: 12.5" x 7.5" x 18" (31.75 cm x 19 cm x 45.75 cm)
Estimate: $6,000 - 12,000
