Franz Burkert was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. From 1956 to 1961, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Maximilian Melcher and Christian Martin. After completing his studies, he remained in Vienna, where he worked as a teacher and graphic artist from 1961 onwards. Alongside his teaching work, Burkert devoted himself intensively to the visual arts. His body of work encompasses both painting and graphic art and is characterised by a meticulous exploration of form and composition. As an artist of the second half of the 20th century, Burkert follows in the tradition of Austrian post-war art. His training at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts had a lasting influence on his artistic output. His artistic circle included figures such as Robin Christian Andersen, Herbert Martin, Rudolf Hausner, Wolfgang Hutter, Arik Brauer and Ernst Fuchs, who had a decisive influence on 20th-century Austrian art. Burkert’s work is primarily situated within the realm of representational painting and graphic art. Drawing, printmaking and figuration play a central role in his work, bearing witness to his technical precision and his sure instinct for form, composition and pictorial structure.
