Description
This antique wooden game board tray is a dual-purpose object intended for both utility and play, characteristic of American folk art from the late 19th to early 20th century. The rectangular tray is constructed from two wide wooden planks joined horizontally and is enclosed by a raised wooden gallery rim. The center of the tray features a hand-painted 8x8 checkerboard grid suitable for checkers or chess, rendered in alternating squares of mustard-yellow and dark brown paint. The grid is framed by a thin gold-painted border. The entire top surface is finished with a dark pigment. The tray is fitted with two simple, D-shaped metal handles securely attached to the side rails. The reverse reveals the natural grain of the wooden planks and features hand-applied markings in black paint. These markings include two blocky shapes near the center-bottom and the numerals 71 to the right, likely functioning as utilitarian inventory or storage numbers. The piece does not bear an identifiable manufacturer name or trademark. Bid directly at Bid.Ziebarths.com for a lower buyers premium (18%). We offer in-house shipping on all items.
