He was commonly known as Yuzo and used the art names Jichisai, Kikuryo, and Dako. He traveled to Edo, where he studied Confucianism under Hattori Randai and calligraphy under Hagiwara Sh?gan; he also studied Nanga-style painting under Yamamoto Kinkoku.
