The Canada Life Assurance Company was founded in 1847 by banker Hugh Cossart Baker Sr. in Hamilton, Ontario, making it Canada's very first domestic life insurance provider. The company moved its headquarters to Toronto in 1900 and expanded its financial services internationally. In 2003, Canada Life was acquired by Great-West Lifeco. The company’s corporate structure shifted significantly on January 1, 2020, when Great-West Life, London Life, and the original Canada Life officially amalgamated into one unified entity under the Canada Life banner.
