Description
SN. 3670. Cal. 14 Bore Shot and 16 Bore Rifle. According to company records, this gun was completed June 22, 1842 and built as a 14 bore shotgun in the left brl and 16 bore rifle in the right. It is furnished with 30" fine damascus brls that have slightly raised flat top rib with fixed rear sight and blade front sight. Top rib engraved "J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON". Breech ends with silver bands and floral engraving. Gun has rosewood ram rod and damascus ferrules. Wedge fastened walnut stock is flat top point pattern checkered at fore with scroll engraved escutcheon and trigger plate. Sidelocks are scroll engraved and engraved "PURDEY" at center. Trigger guard with scroll on bow, SN towards rear portion of tang. Gun made with double triggers, safety on locks, and tall scroll engraved hammers. Cross eye dominate sinistral buttstock is nicely figured English walnut which has an engraved hatch box and terminates with its original full steel checkered buttplate. Condition
Very good to excellent. Brls retain nearly all of what appears to be their original brown & white damascus pattern. Stocks are excellent and sound with scattered minor handling marks and retain about 80% of what appears to be its original finish with areas of finish added for preservation. Metal surfaces have mostly toned to gray, engraving remains crisp. Bores appear excellent. Mechanics are crisp. 6444. ANTIQUE.
