'Sarah Mayo may be considered one of the most innovative and influential Washoe artists. Sarah developed the use of massive designs, the integration of both colours in the design, and the alternating arrangement a decade before these features became standard in Washoe basketry. Most importantly, it appears that Sarah Mayo was the first Washoe weaver to develop pictorial imagery. Whatever their source, these pictorial designs were so successful, both commercially and artistically, that they were imitated by almost all contemporary and succeeding Washoe basketweavers. Despite the number of artists who imitated her work, no other weaver represented these naturalistic motifs with the dynamic vigor and ingenuity of formal planning that characte3rize the best of Sarah's art.'
