'Marie' was selected instead of 'Maria' because it was suggested that 'Marie' was a name more familiar to the non-Indian public. By 1925 the custom of signing pottery was becoming well established. It was about this time that Julian's name was added to the signature, as he did all of the painting of decoration and helped with the firing.'
